Throwback Thursday!

I was so happy when I received this cover for Horizons, my first published novel through Dreamspinner Press. Back in 2009 we didn't have as many choices in stock shots, and photo manipulation was commonplace. I asked for a hunky Nordic-type for Clark, my closeted football player, and a serious professional to represent Jody, the out and proud emergency room physician who turned Clark's world upside down. This is what the art department created for me. Although I've had better covers since then, I still have a soft spot for this first.

In 2013, a second edition was released with this cover created by Reese Dante. As you can see, the difference in style is significant, but I think Reese captured the vulnerability in my character, and I was just as thrilled with this cover as the original.

The closeted athlete has become a favorite trope in the M/M genre since I wrote Horizons, and I know this story continues to resonate nine years later. Revisiting this novel during Pride Month is a way of reminding myself why I'm in this genre in the first place. If my story made a difference in a young boys life than I've succeeded beyond my wildest dreams. You can find this first book in the Horizons Series at Dreamspinner Press and all the other major outlets.

Horizons Series: Book One

College football player Clark Stevens, a popular wide receiver with a potential NFL contract, has a few problems. He's got a jealous girlfriend, a narrow-minded and controlling father, an attention problem, and an unexpected and powerful attraction to the trauma doctor—the male trauma doctor—who treats him for a broken bone.

Dr. Jody Williams is getting some really mixed signals. He can't ignore how much he wants Clark, because it's obvious Clark feels the same way. For the out and proud doctor, the solution seems very simple. For Clark, it's not! His world is not gay-friendly, and the obstacles he's faced have led him to deny his sexuality for years.

It's the Super Bowl of disasters, no matter how you look at it. In the end, Clark has to decide if he's going to stick with the only life he's ever known or take a chance on a new one with Jody.

First Edition published by Dreamspinner Press, April 2009.
Second Edition published by Dreamspinner Press, July 2013.
