Happy Year of the Rooster!

Many of you know I believe in Chinese Astrology. I've even used one of the signs as a title for a novel (Fire Horse). Last year was a terrible year in many ways. Here's hoping this one will be a lot better. I've attached a link so you can read your individual horoscopes. Your animal sign is based on year of birth. Have fun checking out the predictions.

Friday Previews

“If I were Owen, I’d be hitchhiking my way to California, but he was always ruled by his emotions rather than his pea brain. We’ve already established that. What if I’m right, Seth, and he’s out for blood? I fucked him over by calling in Adam and Jack. You managed to screw up his plans by locking yourself in that room. He’s not only broke; he’s been humiliated, and he’s not going to let that go.”
“Stop it,” Seth pleaded. “You’re scaring the heck out of me.”
“I’m sorry, babe, but if it’s any consolation, I’m scared as well. And that’s another thing,” Bryce admitted. “I never stood up to Owen, and the day he showed up in my office and shoved me against the wall, I froze. Instead of fighting back, I let him intimidate me like he did in the past. If I had been quicker to react, the cops might have gotten to you before Owen did.”
Seth regarded Bryce with renewed interest. “Aside from being a cheating asshole, was he also physically abusive?”
Bryce thought about lying to spare his ego, but he knew Seth would see right through him, and he’d only be worse off. It took every ounce of control to stay calm and to maintain some semblance of dignity, even as he stripped away this final layer. “Yes, he was.”

“It started out innocently,” Bryce said. “Back in those days I was pretty vanilla and didn’t know anything about breath play. I just figured Owen liked it rough, but the first time he wrapped his fingers around my neck and started squeezing, I panicked.”
“Jesus!”
“Yeah, it was terrifying because I didn’t realize what he was doing or why. I was sure he wanted to kill me.”
“Why on earth would you think that?” Seth asked.
“We’d been seeing each other for over six months, and I was starting to complain about being his dirty secret. It ticked me off that we never went out in public, and sex was always rushed. He didn’t talk about a shared future or admitted that he cared for me, much less loved me. I was starting to realize the romance was one-sided, and it was getting old.”
“Why didn’t you try seeing someone who was emotionally available?”
Bryce snorted. “Owen threatened to tear off my dick if I looked at another guy.”

The entire Open Series is 25% off until January 23. Get caught up before Open Case releases on February 3.

Friday Previews

The doorbell rang, jerking Seth back to the present. Shutting his laptop, he made his way to the front door, grumbling about another interruption. As he turned the deadbolt, he wondered why no one had buzzed him from the security desk downstairs, but that didn’t pop into his head until he opened the door and stared into the now familiar face of Owen Lightfoot.
He was wearing a Jimmy John’s hat and vest and holding up one of their bags. “Lunch?” he offered cheerily.

Reflexively, Seth said, “Wrong apartment.”
“Is that the way to greet an old friend?”
“You’re no friend of mine.”
“Well, at least we agree on something.”
“You need to go.” Seth attempted to close the door, but Owen was quicker than a weasel and just as intent on his target. Blocking the door with what looked like a size-sixteen boot, he shoved his way past Seth, muttering, “Out of my way, blondie.”
“What do you want?” Seth asked. To his own ears, he sounded fearless, but his heart was banging against his chest and a part of him wanted to shout for help. But he knew that terror was an accelerant for bullies, and Owen was a prime example of that vile breed. Furthermore, he had no idea if the surveillance team was even in place. Perhaps he had to rethink his opinion of Owen’s IQ. This was the second time he’d managed to squeak through a purportedly secure building. Bryce would be livid!

Friday Previews

I'll be sharing a few lines from one of my novels every Friday to give you a preview. These are from Open Case which will release on February 3.

“I should kick you in the balls for keeping something this important from me,” Seth griped. “What the fuck, Bryce? I thought we’d moved past this stupid need to swaddle me like an infant.”
“You’re right, and I’m sorry. My only excuse is that I was in shock.”
“So was I,” Seth replied in a calmer tone, “but you didn’t see me clamming up and harboring a giant secret.”
“Point taken and acknowledged. I was wrong to keep this from you. To my way of thinking, I was sure the cops would find Owen in a few days and this implied threat would be a moot point. We’re going on three weeks, and that fucker is still out there. Now I’m really starting to worry, and that’s why I suggested the guns.”
“Do you honestly think he’ll come back?”
